Why we believe in virtual mentorship (and how to do it right) ✔
How our Project Advisors work their magic to make sure things work for you! ✨
Hey there!
Can you believe March 2022 is coming to an end? Not that we are that attached to 2021, but the first 3 months have gone by insanely quickly (well at least for us at CABLE!)
2022 has had a rocky start for many parts of the world, and we’re certainly hoping that everyone is managing to keep safe and healthy, and that things will get better soon. Meanwhile for those who are already done with the year, here’s a meme for you:
Jan-Mar cohort update
Ahem… speaking about March, the Jan-Mar research mentorship cohort is just about coming full circle! We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has taken their time and energy to participate in this initiative. We have heard heartwarming stories, inspirational exchanges and fantastic feedback from our mentors, mentees, and Project Advisors, and we will be sharing these success stories with you very soon.
Some of the initial suggestions we have received so far include having masterclasses for mentors, and also networking sessions for both mentors and mentees. We’re working on piloting our masterclass series, and we hope to share some key updates with you very soon! Meanwhile, we are also in the middle of building out our Discord community for our mentors and mentees to be able to meet virtually, so make sure to join through this link!
#MentoringMatters: Virtual mentorship, and how to do it right
We used to be largely confined by physical proximity when it came to looking for personal relationships, including mentor-mentee dynamics. The concept of virtual mentorship extends the realm of possibilities for us to meet people who are not in our shared geography, therefore making it possible to be more inclusive than ever.
This wonderful piece by Ellen Ensher, Ph.D. and Brad Johnson on the Harvard Business Review sums up 5 focus areas to ensure a successful virtual mentoring relationship. These are:
Building trust
Clarifying rules of engagement
Being intentional when starting the mentorship
Balancing authenticity with boundaries
Collaborating wherever possible
CABLE was built with the mission to utilise virtual mentorship to close the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate students all across the world. We want out mentor-mentee pairs to succeed, which is why each and every mentoring pair is facilitated by a dedicated Project Advisor to make sure they are doing virtual mentorship the right way.
Our PAs make sure mentors and mentees set SMART objectives and manage expectations on both end, while checking in every now and then to make sure there is an ongoing, collaborative relationship. This is what makes us so special! Here’s a huge shoutout to our Project Advisors Yi Xuan Lee Sermila Ispartaligil Jacky Lo Teng Zhi Sean for making mentorship at CABLE effective and fun :)
