Are you READY to run a global mentorship programme? πββοΈ
CABLE is looking for an Operations Executive to run the show β¨
Hey there!
Greetings from CABLE - Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim friends and happy Easter in advance to those who are celebrating π
We are also celebrating the end of our first official Research Mentorship Programme cohort spanning across January to March 2022. Well done to all our mentors, mentees, and everyone who worked so hard to put this initiative together.
With that said, itβs time for us to seek someone to pass the baton onto - someone who will be brave enough to accept the mission of running the Research Mentorship Programme.
The Hunt for an Operations Executive
Arguably one of the most exciting roles to have ever popped up within CABLE - as we expand to develop more initiatives for our community, we are officially recruiting an Operations Executive to run the show: someone to take over the Research Mentorship Programme and oversee it from end-to-end.
Responsibilities include:
Lead the Project Advisors team during the cohort of the Research Mentorship Programme
Act as the first point of contact for Project Advisors and contribute to the recruitment, training and evaluation of new Project Advisors
Contribute to wider activities related to the Research Mentorship Programme
Contribute to cross-workstream outreach, innovation, and marketing initiatives
So, do you think you have what it takes to oversee a large scale programme involving undergraduates and postgraduates from across the world, while leading a fleet of committed advisors to support you in your mission? Join us today - you will be running the next cohort (Jul to Sep 2022)!
Please read the full role description here and if youβre interested/know someone who may be keen, reach out to us directly by emailing us at thecableproject.team@gmail.com!
#MentoringMatters: Checking out another mentorship programme π
In our efforts to improve our offerings as a research mentorship community, we are constantly on the lookout to understand what other people are doing in the same space. We recently came across this well-documented exploratory study on designing and running a research mentorship programme in Africa, which also includes a review of the outcomes and challenges experienced over a two year period.
This study, led by Lem Ngongalah, a public health researcher at Newcastle University, documents the development of a research mentorship programme involving 41 students and young researchers in Africa, which led to multiple beneficial outcomes:
Knowledge transfer: Mentees gained knowledge and skills in various research areas including proposal writing, research methods, data analysis, report writing and research publication.
Research study development: 9 mentees gained their first research publication; 3 successfully completed their first grant proposal
Career development: 5 mentees gained skills that helped them secure paid research jobs.
Passing it on: 11 mentees have βgraduatedβ from the programme, 7 of which are currently enrolled as trainee mentors.
Empowerment and enablement: Mentees appreciated the opportunity to improve on their research skills and felt that the programme gave them a βsafeβ environment to freely express their concerns.
We deeply resonated with some of the challenges described, including difficulty finding suitable mentors (so if youβd like to volunteer as a mentor, email us now!) and lack of defined goals (which we have identified from our earlier university society days, and therefore have mitigated with the support of our Project Advisors who helped mentor-mentee pairs set SMART goals from the start). We are also overjoyed to see that the structure of our mentorship programme is very similar to other large-scale programmes out there, and we would like to express our support for these communities and committees for their efforts in closing the gap for students who really need it.
