CABLE Launch Event - THANK YOU! 💡

CABLE goes live!
 Hi ,
We are so proud to announce that our official launch has been extremely successful, and in today's newsletter we want to share some these exciting headlines with you:
TODAY'S BIG STORIES
Stories from CABLE's Launch Event
Our new mentors are ready to inspire!
We REALLY need a Head of Marketing and Communications...

Stories from CABLE's Insight Day
We have successfully launched CABLE as a global research mentorship community on 31st Oct 2021. With more than 40 very enthusiastic participants on our Google Meet call, we revealed our new face as CABLE, talked about hopes and dreams for our community’s future, and shared our new website with the audience.
Â
Some highlights from the event:
Joris noted that mentorship is important to have anchor points not just to give guidelines but also to reassure you that you don’t feel like an impostor in the field, which is important for people transitioning to new fields.
Anushree mentioned that working in the field of social work was helpful for her to transition from biomedical engineering to social work -Â all her internships were social work internships, which helped her to identify areas in the field she saw as she can work in.
Kian-Yong shared that role-modelling is helpful for you to look up to, and that it is important to learn from experience: both good and bad experience.
Isha emphasised that we don’t have to have just one role model. We can take different parts of different people to create a meta role model that is best suited to our needs.
In terms of what makes a good mentor, our panellists mentioned being approachable, human, and not someone who spoonfeeds the mentee answers -  a mentor needs to be someone who helps you develop your own point of view instead of imposing their thoughts on you. Also, if your role model spends more time talking than listening to you, they’re not good role models!
Our brilliant past mentees Neha, Yi Xuan and Sermila shared their experiences being a CABLE mentee!
... and that's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who attended for being a part of our new beginning, and if you couldn’t make it to the event, we would love to have you with us next time! If you would like to sign up as a mentor, mentee, or if you have any questions/comments at all, do reach out to us!

Our new mentors are ready to inspire!
Another exciting event that happened during our launch was the revealing of our new CABLE mentors here! This list is expected to grow  - we are interviewing new mentors every single week! We now offer Experience and Project mentorship programmes summarised as follows:
Experience Mentorship: undergraduate mentee engages in mentoring conversations with postgraduate mentor to meet specified learning goals
Project Mentorship: undergraduate mentee works collaboratively with postgraduate mentor to complete a mini-project
As our new programme is all-year-round and off-cycle, our mentor pool is expected to grow and therefore we are hoping to be able to update you with new mentors every time we send out this newsletter (that will be the dream!). But while you're here today, we'd like you to take a look at some of our mentor profiles as a taster anyway...
Â

Experience Mentor: Disha Sharma, Post-doc Researcher at Princeton University

Experience Mentor: Victo Silva, PhD in Science and Technology Policy at University of Campinas

Experience Mentor: Julian Laufs, Amazon Corporate Security Team (completed PhD at UCL)

Project Mentor: Will Chan, MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces at Imperial College London

Project Mentor: Kok-Yong Chin, Post-doc Researcher in Pharmacology at University Kebangsaan Malaysia
We REALLY need a Head of Marketing and Communications...
Â
As many of you may now know, CABLE is looking for a talented and passionate individual to join us as our Head of Marketing and Communications (and make this newsletter even better perhaps?!).
You can read the role description here, with a special note that at CABLE our committee is free to make the best out of our roles - that means leading projects and initiatives that we find meaningful and that align to CABLE's mission and values.
If you are interested in the position, please email us and we will be in touch for next steps. Alternatively, if you know someone who may be a great fit for the team, please send them our way! We will make sure that you get brownie points...
That's it for today!
Thank you for being on board with CABLE’s mentorship community - keep your eyes peeled for more exciting news coming your way!

See you soon,Â
